Wat Chiang Man is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai's Old City dating back to 1296. The larger viharn, the main hall of a Thai temple complex, has a three-tiered gold roof with serpent details and a gold face.
In Thai Buddhist architecture, goldwork is indicative of a royal temple. The construction of a temple is also considered good karma, which explains the abundance of temples in this ancient area of Chiang Mai.
